This study examines the role of the Indonesian National Army (TNI) in addressing the security threats in the South China Sea (SCS), a key geopolitical region in the Indo-Pacific. China’s claims over nearly 90% of the SCS have intensified territorial conflicts with Southeast Asian nations and strained relations with the United States. The study aims to evaluate Indonesia’s defense strategies in safeguarding its sovereignty in the region. Using qualitative methods, including literature review and SWOT analysis, the study explores the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats to Indonesia’s military defense. Findings indicate that Indonesia must modernize its military capabilities, strengthen its defense posture through the Minimum Essential Force (MEF) framework, and enhance its intelligence technology. Additionally, the study emphasizes the importance of domestic defense industry independence and regional cooperation to mitigate external threats. These strategies will ensure Indonesia’s preparedness for external and internal challenges.
